Appalachian Amusement Center – a vertical wind tunnel/skydiving simulator and concessions. 828-926-9463 Biltmore Estate – A 250-room French chateau built by George Vanderbilt in 1895. Blue Ridge Parkway – Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010, The Blue Ridge Parkway meanders along 46 miles of the highest ridges in the Appalachians, wandering back and forth across the county line between Haywood, Jackson and Transylvania counties. The view from the top is stunning anywhere you stop along the Great Balsams, the ancient range that borders the southern side of Haywood County. You can reach the parkway from four points in Haywood – take U.S. 276 southeast from Waynesville to Wagon Road Gap, N.C. 215 from Canton Area Historical Museum - Displays and extensive artifacts about the settling of Canton and the Pigeon River area. Grandfather Mountain – an environmental preserve with a mile-high swinging bridge, hiking trails and festivals. Great Smoky Mountains National Park – the most popular park in America overlaps into the Maggie Valley area. Protected land includes great hiking and biking trails, scenic drives and beautiful scenery. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad – Ride in comfort and see some of the most breathtaking views from the various excursions scheduled year-round. Themed events at Easter and during the summer. Surrounded with breathtaking views in a beautiful mountain setting, Ghost Town is a timeless, family-fun theme park located in the heart of Maggie Valley. Start your day by riding the chairlift that takes you 3,500 feet up the side of a mountain with 75-degree inclines, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. Enjoy the staged gunfights, live music and shows as well as a mile-high roller coaster. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino – a modern 88,000-sq.ft casino open 24 hours every day with major entertainment. Horseback Riding at Cataloochee Ranch – Two-hour and all-day rides for adults and children over 6 years old. 828-926-1401 Old Pressley Sapphire Mine - Search for sapphires and other gems. The world’s largest BlueStar sapphires were discovered here. 828-648-6320 RAFTING French Broad River – one of the oldest rivers in the nation offers a variety of rapids from Class II to Class IV. Nantahala River – White water rafting on the Nantahala is available for half-day trips between March and October. Approximately one hour from Twinbrook Resort, the Nantahala offers Class II to Class III rapids suitable to everyone over 8 years old. Pigeon River – the closest outpost to Twinbrook, the Pigeon offers the Upper River section for ages 8 and up, and the Lower river section for little ones as young as 3. WATERFALLS Bridal Veil Falls - Water cascades over the road. US 64. Bridal Veil is easy to find. Just look for the sign on U.S. 64, 2.5 miles east of Highlands in the Cullasaja Gorge. Cullasaja Falls - Accessible by a hiking trail, 250 feet of water is visible from US 64. Cullasaja is located off U.S. 64, 11 miles east of Franklin, 9 miles west of Highlands in the Cullasaja Gorge. Dry Falls - Walk underneath this 75-foot cascade. US 64. Dry Falls is located on U.S. 64 between Franklin and Highlands. Looking Glass Falls - The 85-foot falls are visible from the road. US 276. Looking Glass Falls is located right off of U.S. 276. From Brevard, take U.S. 276 north, about 5 miles past the entrance to Pisgah National Forest. The falls will be on your right. Sliding Rock - Take a glide down this natural water slide. US 276. From the intersection of US 276 and US 64 in Pisgah Forest, NC, go about eight miles north on US 276. You will pass Looking Glass Falls on the right after five miles. Look for signs directing you to the Sliding Rock recreation area parking lot on the left. Toxaway Falls - US 64 passes right over the 125-foot falls. From Sapphire, NC, drive north on US 64 for two miles. Look for a large masonry bridge at the base of a hill and the dam to the left. Cross the bridge and park in the graveled area on the left side. Carefully cross US 64 to glimpse the falls on the south side. Whitewater Falls - At 411 feet, Whitewater is the highest cascade in the eastern United States. US 64. Drive west on U.S. 64. At Sapphire, turn left on NC 281 and go south to the Whitewater Falls entrance OR Take 240-West to I26-West. Go to the Asheville Airport/Brevard Exit (exit 9) and take a right onto U.S. 64. Drive to Brevard and follow above directions.
